UNDERSTANDING MENOPAUSE
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is a natural transition that typically occurs in women between the ages of 35 and 55. It marks the point when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone, eventually leading to the permanent end of menstrual cycles and fertility.
As hormone levels decline, many women begin to experience changes in their bodies and emotions. And while it can feel unfamiliar, this stage of life is also an opportunity—a time when responsibilities begin to shift, and self-care can finally take center stage.
What Is Perimenopause?
Before menopause officially begins, many women go through a transitional phase known as perimenopause. This stage can last anywhere from 2 to 8 years, and is characterized by hormonal fluctuations that may cause irregular cycles and noticeable symptoms.
How Is Menopause Diagnosed?
Menopause is typically diagnosed when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 consecutive months, and blood tests show elevated levels of FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone).
During perimenopause, hormone levels—especially estrogen—can fluctuate significantly. While bloodwork may help assess hormonal shifts, levels often vary throughout the month. Cycle mapping (a hormone test that tracks levels across an entire cycle) can provide a more complete picture.
